Corn Cob Light Bulbs FAQ

Can I use a corn cob bulb in my enclosed fixture?

This is a critical safety question. Not all corn cob bulbs are rated for enclosed fixtures. Corn cobs generate heat, and enclosed fixtures trap that heat, which can severely shorten the bulb's lifespan or create a fire hazard. You must check the product specifications. Only use a corn cob bulb that is explicitly rated for enclosed fixtures if your application requires it.

What base type do I need?

The most common base for corn cob bulbs replacing HID lights is the E39 (Mogul Base) in North America or E40 internationally. Always check your existing HID bulb's base to confirm. Some models may also be available in E26 (medium) bases for lower-wattage applications.

My existing fixture has a ballast. Can I use a corn cob bulb with it?

Yes, but LED corn cob bulbs are designed to be direct-wire. This means the existing HID ballast must be removed (bypassed), and the bulb is wired directly to the main power source. Attempting to run a corn cob bulb through a ballast will damage the bulb and is a safety risk. Installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.
